Not so much jumping but so far as I can make out, avoiding the heat of the day. Which is why I got up at before dawn the other morning with a family of keen anglers for a dawn raid fishing on Derwentwater. We had been out earlier in the week and struggled on one of the hottest days of the year. We managed a few as we usually do but it was hard going. That evening I drove to my favourite Tench pond and the temp on the gauge was reading 29 degrees!!! The pond was clear enough to watch fish cruising past the weeds and they were spawning. Guess who blanked? Next day was fly casting tuition day in astonishing heat and we managed a couple of nice fish to dry flies before mid afternoon when the heatstroke kicked in and we had to cry off for Dandelion and Burdock in large amounts.

Next morning was back to the lake and the daybreak start. Arriving at the boat I rowed from the mooring, not wanting to break the silence of a stunningly atmospheric July daybreak over Derwentwater. It was worth it just to be there and as I don’t often take clients out at that time in the morning was a rare treat for us all. Whilst the fish were not throwing themselves at us the smells of the morning, and sight of pike bow waving across the lake to attack a surface lure was well worth the gritty eyes of the afternoon.We had around a dozen chances and lost a few good fish as well as bagging our share but the heat was back by eight thirty and the best of it was over. Hey ho …so it was off to the perch parts and a some trunddling. As it’s the time of year where we are out fishing with youngsters the other pictures are of the story so far!! Apologies to those wanting know about Trout fishing in the Lake District or Pike fishing on Windermere, but its too hot and far too sunny. And the Perch fishing is about to switch on!!! Which is why, I’m off getting some worms for tomorrow.
