Because it's Raining.....

We had a great trip to Norway staying at Winsnes Lodge on the Guala ,and although the salmon were not co-operative at least a few were seen and Matt had a nice sea liced fifteen pounder on the Tuesday. One morning we took a drive up the valley to a waterfall to watch fish leaping and there in the pool below I watched a pod of thirty salmon hanging two feet down over fifteen feet of gin clear water. Mostly these were salmon of around thirty pounds, but on the edge of the shoal was a fish that quite literally made my jaw drop. It is not often I am rendered speechless but for the first time in my life I was looking at a salmon in excess of Fifty pounds. Clambering back up to where Sue was waiting at the fence I was a gibbering wreck. Honestly, it was enormous!!! Sometimes to know there are places in the world where these creatures exist, is simply enough. It is not always about catching them…..Mind you..next time I am going equipped for beasts!!.The landscape, people and hospitality were just great and I’m really looking forward to the next visit. On a different note, we have had some great pike and perch fishing with lots of stripeys up to 3lbs and some fine pike on the fly and surface poppers, sadly the temperatures have fallen away and surface sport has slowed for the time being. On the up side though, all the recent rain has brought some good runs of early salmon into the rivers. Best so far only 12lb but bigger fish will hopefully be arriving soon. NOVEMBER WARNING: I am taking the big boat to Windermere over the latter part of November so maybe give me a call if you fancy a shot at some of the legendary twenties. Sit and wait tactics but with a brew on in the cabin and good baits in the right places …anything could occur at any moment. Oh Yes…I am looking forward to it!!!!

Tarra for now,

Eric
